My first project with Curious Comedy was a blast--It’s wonderful to work with people who have such a clear vision. They wanted a fun, freewheeling retro feeling and had a specific image they wanted me to include. The festival’s name, All Jane No Dick, is a wonderful double-entendre and certainly wouldn’t have been used around the time that little Jane was originally painted. This detail brought a certain postmodern flavor to the concept and I chose to bring that out with typography. A bit of Portland grunge came into play with the No Dick spray paint; along with the grungy textures that serve the retro-aged look as well.
The colors are a direct result of my collaborators’ suggestions and I couldn’t be more pleased with them. There were very few changes to my original layout, but those colors were proving difficult. What I brought in was an exact inverse of the final scheme, Jane in a blue dress on a red background. It would have been eye-catching on a wall, but there was something too angry and intense about the red. The reversal was just what the piece needed, and I am so thrilled to have gotten the advice.
I love the simplicity and playfulness in the final piece and it made branding the event a breeze.
