Friday Night Fights
“Hello PDX comedy peoples. Curious Comedy will be starting a show in October called Friday Night Fights. It's a 10pm Cagematch-style show. Two improv teams will battle it out for more stage time! Winners play the next show versus a new challenger and the audience votes. More details soon - but for now, think about putting a team together. Teams from 1 to 100 welcome. Shows will be 17 minutes EXACTLY. Hosted by Jay Robert Flewelling!”
Working with Jay was fantastic, another great example of a client who had a clear idea of what he wanted but didn’t have precise requirements. He was certain that this design had to be Mixed Martial Arts Cagematch rather than Boxing, and those two do have very different graphic identities. He also brought me a wealth--perhaps even a surfeit (Vocab bonus points) of pictures to work with. The group had gone out for a grand photo shoot and had come back with hundreds of images for me to choose from.
There are few things as encouraging for a fledgling design as getting well prepared image resources to work with. Among those hundreds of pictures, the final chosen image was by far the most dynamic and featured the majority of the cast. I have to admit that I love working with comedians, because they aren’t afraid to contort their faces into the most fascinating pictures. Best. Expressions. Ever.
While working on this project, I wanted to make sure the image conveyed the levity of the show. I had this sneaking suspicion that the very serious and desaturated Mixed Martial Arts-inspired branding could misinform our potential audience. The final result is a fun mix of cage match and improv and I love it.
